Vetmedix Case Share | Aplicación de la terapia con láser de alta energía en una herida por mordedura de tortuga marina

Introducción

Traumatic bite wounds represent a frequent category of trauma in sea turtles within both wild and artificial captive environments, predominantly caused by conspecific fighting or attacks by other aquatic organisms. Once injured, open bite wounds manifest across the sea turtle’s body surface. Without prompt intervention, such wounds readily foster aquatic pathogens, leading to exudation, suppuration, recurrent infections, and spreading inflammatory lesions. As a safe and efficient physical therapy modality in veterinary and aquatic animal medicine, terapia láser clase 4 delivers distinct advantages including safe non-invasiveness, rapid anti-inflammatory and anti-edema action, potent analgesia, enhancement of local microcirculation, antimicrobial anti-infection properties, and accelerated healing of ruptured wounds and soft tissues. Consequently, it has emerged as the preferred rehabilitation intervention for various bite traumas and secondary ulcerative infections in sea turtles.

This report documents the comprehensive therapeutic process of utilizing VETMEDIX veterinary laser equipment to treat skin and soft tissue lesions, ulcerations, and infections resulting from a body surface bite wound in a sea turtle at Atlantis Sanya. It provides a clinical reference framework for rehabilitating similar traumatic bite breakdown cases in sea turtles, assisting affected animals in rapidly alleviating wound pain, eliminating localized inflammation, controlling wound infection, repairing disrupted trauma tissue, and restoring surface epidermal integrity alongside systemic health.

05 Resumen del caso

Recuperación a corto plazo:

Following systematic high-energy laser physiotherapy, the acute localized inflammation of the sea turtle’s bite wound subsided rapidly. Blood flow and tissue microcirculation around the lesion site improved markedly, while damaged superficial skin, muscle, and subcutaneous soft tissues progressed steadily toward repair. Abnormal behaviors such as frequent rubbing against the wound, agitation, and reluctance to move ceased entirely. Limb movement and swimming posture returned to a natural state, demonstrating prominent short-term wound repair and physical recovery outcomes.

Seguimiento a largo plazo:

Subsequent long-term follow-up assessments revealed that the sea turtle maintained excellent mental status, feeding behavior, and swimming stamina. The superficial bite ulcerations closed and healed completely with no inflammatory recurrence. Normal physiological behaviors—including feeding, swimming, resting, and climbing—were fully restored. The condition of the surface integument and underlying soft tissues returned to a robust, healthy state, reflecting stable and outstanding long-term rehabilitation.

Conclusión:

This case provides solid clinical evidence of the efficacy of VETMEDIX small animal high-energy laser therapy in treating body surface breakdown, soft tissue trauma, and secondary infections caused by bite wounds in sea turtles. Driven by Photobiomodulation (PBM) mechanisms, high-energy laser targets damaged and infected ulcerative areas in a non-invasive manner. It rapidly enhances local tissue microcirculation, resolves regional inflammatory reactions, suppresses opportunistic aquatic pathogen proliferation, effectively relieves wound swelling and pain, and accelerates the repair of broken skin and underlying soft tissues. This modality effectively prevents complications such as chronic wound infections, non-healing ulcers, excessive scar tissue formation, tissue adhesions, and permanent functional impairment. By substantially shortening the recovery cycle of bite injuries, this terapia láser veterinaria protocol helps afflicted sea turtles rebuild their protective epidermal barrier and swiftly regain normal physiological vitality and behavioral function.
