Running a continuous-wave laser inside the narrow nasal cavity can cause heat to build up almost immediately. By implementing a 20% duty cycle\u2014where the laser pulses on for 2 milliseconds and rests for 8 milliseconds\u2014the tissue receives intense photon packets that stimulate the deep submucosa, while the long rest periods give the delicate nasal lining plenty of time to cool.
