High-Power Laser Therapy for Lumbar Prolapse and Chronic Low Back Pain

Patient:

a 39 years old female, has symptoms of numbness and swelling in both legs. She also has occasional pain in her calves, which occurs frequently on both sides. Also has pain in her buttocks near the coccyx.

Assessment and examination:

● Lumbar curvature straight
● VAS = 7 points
● Lumbar soft tissue tenderness (+)
● Lumbar anterior flexion and posterior extension and lateral flexion activities are slightly limited, accompanied by pain
● Straight leg raising test negative; object raising test positive

Diagnostic imaging:

● MR: lumbar 4 lumbar 5 sacral 1 protruding
● Sacral canal with cysts

Treatment plan: Comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis and treatment standards for chronic lumbar protrusion and acute sprain, manual loosening and joint loosening for the muscles, combined with physical factor high-energy laser treatment, mainly for the lumbar quadratus, erector spinae, and sacrum for 15 minutes, and lumbar functional exercise to improve joint mobility.
Treatment effect: After one treatment, the swelling and numbness in the legs became much lighter, and the pain in the sacrum disappeared. After a week of follow-up, the patient was basically normal.
